Toward A Greener Diet
Last Monday, I had the pleasure of attending the 6th Annual Sustainable Food Expo at UCSD which reflected Food Day's theme: Toward a Greener Diet. The activities of the expo ranged from presentations of academic research, to campus resources, to cooking demonstrations.
Food Day is a day to celebrate, reflect and take action. On October 24th, hundreds of events are held throughout America, gathering like-minded groups dedicated to sustainable food and healthy living to celebrate eating real food and build momentum towards changing food policies. Some of the biggest names in Food Justice are united through their vision for the future of food. They dream of a day where food is sustainable, healthy, accessible, affordable, and produced responsibly. October 24th marks a special day where we can appreciate the successes of the year and garner plans for the future.
This years focus: A Greener Diet. The typical American-diet is one that promotes obesity, diabetes, heart disease, among other health relate issues. Plus, a diet heavy in meat has negative effects on the environment. Eating real food is one way we can help improve our health and our planet.
But a greener diet doesn't just mean eating more vegetables; it means paying attention to how food arrives to your plate. From seed to table, food nourishes our bodies, minds and communities. By bringing awareness to of our food sources, we can reconnect to the land, the people, and the animals that support us.
Below are 3 ways to start moving towards a greener diet:
1. Choose plant based whole foods
2. Eat local
3. Reduce your food waste
Be sure to check in next week to see what's on the menu!
